Novice MId Curriculum U1
Dear parents of Novice Mid students,
Welcome to the Chinese Novice Mid program. Our program is performance towards proficiency-based, the class name indicates the goal students are working to achieve. Our program is theme-based, covering a range of topics organized into four units. We use an active approach to language instruction, with daily lesson goals taught through movement, rhymes, chants, songs, dialogues, story-telling, games and the appropriate use of technology. Our lessons are taught 90% or more in the target language.
The main thrust of the program is to develop oral language skills in Chinese (listening first, then speaking). As children come into our Novice Mid program with a variety of exposure to Chinese, I aim to engage all kids and extend their learning at their level. Our work in class will offer plenty of opportunities to practice performances that will gradually lead to proficiency in Chinese.
Unit 1 Topic: Let’s Learn Chinese
Learning Goals:
By the end of this unit, students will be able to
• understand vocabulary for routines and expectations (instructional language) in order to start building our ability in Chinese (communicational language).
• greet & briefly introduce themselves (name, age etc)
• talk about likes/dislikes (food, drinks)
• answer questions of ‘Who’, ‘What ‘, and choice questions (I like…/I don’t like…)

36 Chinese Characters 36个汉字
A great video to learn about Chinese characters for beginners or young learners. Chinese Character pictograms symbolise objects or express meanings iconically. It is interesting to see how the words evolve over the course of time.
这是一个很有趣的视频,它是通过父亲教儿子识字的过程、通过父亲和儿子之间的对话,说明了中文的象形文字如何用生动形象的方法,呈现物体的外形特征和表达意思。视频还有趣地展示了汉字在历史上不断地演化和发展的过程。视频通过象形文字说明了中国文字的起源故事。

Welcome to our Chinese Class 欢迎你们进入张老师的中文课堂!
Dear parents and students,
Welcome to 2023-2024 academic school year and welcome to my Chinese class! I am so delighted to be able to spend a whole year of Chinese learning journey with you! For the Novice Mid and Novice High 2 classes, we are going to sing, chant together, read, play games, tell stories and we will have fun!
For the Intermediate Mid class, I will adopt balanced literacy approach and strive to strike a balance between listening speaking & reading and writing in Class. I will also aim to cultivate reading habit in students and explore effective ways to help them develop literacy skills.
Please visit this site from time to time to find any information that is relevant and helpful to you.
